Manage Down and Manage Back are two dimensions of people management that do not promote progress or advancement. A mindset of managing back is often focused on regret or blame. Learning from history to improve, or not repeat and start the clock over again, is important, but the positive resulting action from the learning is moving forward. A mindset of managing down can range from neglect on the one end to micromanaging on the other. Efforts in creating a positive engaging environment, addressing issues, fostering career growth, and giving freedom for your team members to Manage Up are best if directed forward.
